Columbus and his crew initially fear the inhabitants of the new islands they discover will be like the headless, cannibalistic anthropophagi as described by Pliny the Elder, but are relieved to find out they are normal looking humans and Columbus eagerly searches for gold mines to exploit, while also trying out native foods.
