There are three things that you can do when you encounter a bear that are proven to be effective: grouping up, getting your bear spray out and getting it ready, and slowly backing away. Additionally, if a bear is approaching you within 10 feet and you have bear spray, it is recommended to spray it to provide the bear a learning opportunity about approaching people.
