The founder of General Magic, Marc Porat, used his vacations as a means of expanding his thinking outside of Apple's day-to-day projects, allowing him to brainstorm and gain more knowledge about related ideas. General Magic was a company that aimed to make a new and innovative device, much like Yoda Worsky's Dune was an attempt at making Dune which failed.
