The Great Heathen Army was a group of people who gathered in Northumbria, acquiring their name from their participation in a big party, or festival. Though over time, the leader of this group, Ivar the Boneless, may have been turned into something of a demigod through myth and legend, this army was made up of individuals led by entrepreneurs who called the shots based on their ship ownership and alliances.
