Trading and Warfare in Ancient City-States
The ancient city-states in a particular area rich in jade, obsidian, salt, seeds and grains traded with each other regularly but also engaged in warfare, as evidenced by the discovery of fortresses, battlements and defensive walls. Some of these city-states had a strong centralized government with a divine ruler who could order sacrificial killings for the sake of bountiful harvests or better weather.
