Two Approaches to Rollups in Blockchain Scaling
listen on Spotify
1:18:38 - 1:26:02 (07:24)

The two approaches to rollups for scaling in blockchain are called rollup and optimistic rollup. Rollup is about putting most of the work off-chain and then only keeping a little bit of it on-chain, scaling to a factor of 10,000 per second. Meanwhile, the optimistic rollup scheme allows one person to submit a transaction with no proof first, and then someone else can disagree with it later on if it turns out to be invalid.

Summary

The podcast discusses two approaches to managing transactions on a blockchain. One of the methods is the optimistic rollup, where transactions are compressed and only a small portion of the data and computation is carried out on the blockchain, while the other is the ZK rollup, where a ZK snark validation proof is used instead of a verification of every transaction.

Summary

Rollups are likely to be the scaling solution for Ethereum. Optimistic Rollups will win for general purpose EVM computation, while ZK Rollups will win out for simple payments, exchange, and other application-specific use cases.
