A US Navy SEAL's first introduction to poverty at a level that was lower than he grew up in, was during his overseas stint. Witnessing cardboard shanty houses and impoverished living conditions where inhabitants couldn't afford basic medical care including changing dressings that could turn septic, was an eye-opener for him.
