Anti-Clerical Violence During The Spanish Civil War
During the Spanish Civil War, anti-clerical violence was rampant in the Republican zone, with nuns' coffins being disinterred, religious objects being desecrated and widespread burning of churches, leading to a negative international image of the Republican zone. The death toll was much higher on the right than the left, and while there were numerous reports of clergy oppression and execution, the church turned a blind eye.
