Aquaporin four, primarily expressed by astrocytes, acts as a bridge between neurons, the synapse and the blood and glymphatic systems in the brain. The glymphatic system, which is closely related to the activities of glial cells, is active during slow-wave sleep at night and low-level walking during the day.
