Tesla's CEO, Elon Musk, states that it was difficult trying to raise money for a startup electric car company in 2008 while General Motors was going bankrupt. The company only made it through that year due to a subset of the existing investors, including Antonio Gracia and Steve Jovitson, who provided financial support.
