The first commercial computer acquired by a lab was a UNIVAC in the late 1950s with 2,000 words of storage, and the storage allocation had to be arranged in a particular way to make fetching data quicker. The physical implementation of mathematics in the form of a mathematical machine was limiting due to bugs and the allocation of memory.
