Former CEO of Google Eric Schmidt was convinced by an executive under him and by venture capitalist John Doerr to hire a coach named Bill Campbell. Schmidt realized the need for a coach after learning that Campbell had helped another executive under him who was battling cancer and had greatly impressed his coworkers with his work ethic.
