The Ethereum community is moving towards a major upgrade called the merge, where the activity on the proof of work chain will be moved to the proof of stake chain, effectively eliminating proof of work altogether. Following the merge transition block, every proof of stake chain block will contain a block of what is currently considered the Ethereum chain, known as the execution chain.
