The national park protects an extensive area covering semi-desert plains, salt flat basins, and mountains of the central Andes, which are home to various species such as puma, wanako, pecunia, and peregrine falcons. It is frequently visited by groups of hikers, climbers, mountain bikers, and scientific expeditions.
