Judd Apatow and Paul Feig had a clear idea that realistic characters for Freaks and Geeks couldn't be found in LA, leading them to search elsewhere for auditions. A majority of the cast ended up being from outside LA, with some members like Martin Starr being lucky to have landed the role while residing in LA, where he recognized creator Paul Feig from the movie Ski Patrol.
