Frederick Douglass's Speech in 1893
In 1893, Frederick Douglass gave a speech in Chicago in celebration of the 90th anniversary of the Haitian revolution and the 30th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation in the United States. Douglass praised Haiti's role in the struggle for universal human liberty and recognized the impact of the abolitionist movement, economics, religion, and slave revolts in ending the institution of slavery worldwide.
