The French perspective on retirement is deeply rooted in the idea of working hard for 30 to 40 years and then enjoying a life free of work with access to important things like relationships and leisurely activities. While many French people work hard throughout their lives, there is a significant population that believes life actually begins after retirement, a contrast to the American view that work enriches one's life.
