Germany had developed economic interests in Haiti and was instrumental in defeating a reform movement that would have hurt their economic design. The US then considered sending troops to Haiti to replace the government with one that would be more friendly to US interests and less friendly to Germany's, ultimately leading to the occupation of Haiti by US Marines.
