The Kerry subcommittee exposed that US officials created a privatized Contra network that allowed drug traffickers to use it as a cover for their operations while turning a blind eye to drug smuggling reports and actively working with known drug smugglers. The Contras and the CIA were found to have trafficked cocaine to help finance their war against Nicaragua.
