Black, commonly referred to as Green Black, a father of dentistry, who invented the pedal-driven dental drill and outlined the best way to prepare a tooth for cavity-filling, and St. Apollonia, the patron saint of dentistry, whose teeth shattered and fell out after being beaten for refusing to renounce her faith, was burned alive, and then made the patron saint of toothaches and dentistry.
