The struggles of Indigenous people in colonial America eventually led to the Salem witch trials which were a result of religious, social and political reasons. The tradition of souling in which soul cakes were given to poor people in exchange for their prayers for the wealthy's dead relatives played a role in the development of witchcraft beliefs.
