Lipid nanoparticles are injected into the muscle where they bump into cells, eventually getting taken up and delivering the RNA to produce proteins, creating an immune response that will protect against the virus. It's less efficient than a virus, but modifying the RNA and properly protecting it in these lipid capsules make it work as a vaccine.
