In 1909, the Rockefeller Sanitary Commission donated $1 million to help combat the prevalence of hookworm in the Southern United States. With the help of a Southerner named Wycliffe Rose, the commission was able to effectively invest in public health and ultimately eradicate the parasite from the region.
