Kevin Ryan, founder of DoubleClick, Gilt, and MongoDB, invested $300,000 into a few interesting ideas which led him to become employee 20 and eventually the CEO of DoubleClick. He later used this method to start Gilt and MongoDB, both of which have multi-billion dollar valuations.
