In May 1946, L. Ron Hubbard and Betty Northrup fled California with $10,000 to $20,000 of Jack Parsons' money, claiming to buy a yacht for resale on the West Coast; Parsons' friend, occult writer Aleister Crowley, suspected a confidence trick.
