John Basilone was a United States Marine Corps gunnery sergeant who received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Guadalcanal in World War II. He went on to participate in the Battle of Iwo Jima and tragically died in combat, but his heroic actions set a standard for bravery and selflessness in the military.
