Lamarck's theory of inheritance of acquired traits, where organisms can pass on traits acquired during their lifetime to their offspring, was controversial and rejected. However, there is evidence for inheritance of experience despite the fact that every cell in the body has its own genome and mutations cannot be transferred to germ cells for the next generation.
