A man's mother wanted him to have a proper education in the railroad industry before he could manage his future along the tracks, so he learned the ways of the railroad as a section hand and foreman on the Connecticut River Railroad, and later worked as a superintendent and managing director of the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad. His mother had a high disdain for self-indulgent socialites and respected people with authentic achievements.
