The bombardment that caused the magma to come up out of the core of Mars led to volcanic activity, shifts in the mantle and the crust, which released hot gas into the atmosphere, thickening it, increasing its temperature, and led to rain. This caused volcanic activity to further increase, making the Martian atmosphere even thicker.
