The Boomerang experiment used hierarchical equal area triangles to measure the first doppler peak in the primordial plasma to determine the geometry of the universe, revealing that it has zero spatial curvature. The data from this experiment also led to the development of fast algorithmic decomposition of spheres and machine learning in the early 2000s.
