In 1921, Mussolini and 34 other members of the fascist party were elected to the chamber of deputies in Rome, quickly becoming part of the government and gaining legitimacy. Mussolini rarely showed up in the chamber but appreciated the power it provided, and it's not a coincidence that the army cracked down on anti-fascists around the same time.
