Although humans cannot add new neurons to the brain in large quantities throughout their lifespan, creating the right chemical and environmental circumstances can shift the nervous system into a state that allows for change. While new neurons can grow connections and even establish new neurons in areas like the olfactory bulb or the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus, the amount of new neurons added to the adult brain is still incredibly small.
