Polar bear Newt's death leads to medical discovery
Newt, a polar bear in Germany who died after a seizure, has led to a medical discovery. Researchers at the German Center of Neurodegenerative Disease and the Liebnitz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research diagnosed Newt with anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis, making him the first known recorded case of an animal with this non-infectious form of encephalitis, which occurs when the body's immune system attacks the brain.
