There have been over 100 different scandals involving police officers in more than 40 states since the 1990s, involving racist emails, texts, and social media activity. However, there is no federal policy for screening or monitoring officers for extremist views, resulting in many active and retired officers being members of extremist groups such as Confederate and anti-Islam groups on Facebook.
