A man named Shikhmurdov became an international symbol of resistance against Turkmenistan's dictator, Niyazov, after he traveled to Europe and spoke out about the terrible conditions in the country. Despite his efforts, no resistance rose up from within Turkmenistan, and Shikhmurdov's attempts to get the US to help overthrow Niyazov were unsuccessful.
