Researchers plan to identify and isolate the genes responsible for the woolly mammoth's characteristics, and use tools like CRISPR to insert the genes into the genomes of living elephant cells so they can eventually give birth to woolly mammoths, and then promote their self-sustaining population in their natural habitat, which is the far north.
