Roots of US policing traced back to armed groups protecting white people
The origins of US policing can be traced back to armed groups whose aim was to protect white people through violence against non-white people, rather than just slave patrols, according to Larry Spruill's paper. Racism was embedded in the police system from its inception, illustrated by the law in 1825 banning any "free Negro or mulatto" from entering the state of Missouri.
