The use of slaves was pervasive throughout the world and across different civilizations, from the Turks to the Arabs, Italians, Russians, Mongols, Chinese, and Indians, and also in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Americas before Columbus. Although slavery varied in form and degree, it was present in all of these societies and took many forms, from war captives to forced labor and religious sacrifice.
