Soldier of Fortune Magazine, founded in 1975 by Robert K. Brown, was the first American publication aimed at the audience of aging baby boomers who thought they could have been hard-bitten mercenaries but never really got the chance. Despite the fact that the magazine's target audience was small, it managed to successfully broaden its appeal to war fans, weapons lovers, fanatic anti-commies, and Walter Mitty types, thereby making it a huge financial success.
