In colonial America, people could be accused and executed for witchcraft based on several kinds of evidence, including spectral evidence, confession, eyewitness testimonies, and various tests, such as the "witch's teat" test. The use of spectral evidence, which allowed witnesses to testify regarding dreams and visions of the accused, was particularly controversial and led to many wrongful convictions.
