Researchers coordinate with Microsoft's digital crime unit to take down botnets by attacking their command and control servers and seizing domains involved, in an effort to cause as much damage to the botnet in as little time as possible, preventing it from recovering. In 2012, Microsoft seized over 800 domains used by SpyEye and Zeus botnets and worked with authorities to turn over information that was discovered.
