The problem of deflecting an asteroid seems less daunting compared to terraforming Mars and converting it into Earth-like conditions. If we possess the technology to terraform Mars and ship a billion people there, then we can easily have enough power to restore Earth to its original state if any catastrophic event ever occurs.
