The death toll from AIDS rose to hundreds of thousands during the 1990s, leading mainstream America to gradually wake up to the idea that gay people are human beings and maybe did not deserve to be abandoned by a sociopathic government. However, Jerry Falwell continued to be a homophobic figure and even complained about the Clinton administration's health care reform plan, stating it would allow AIDS patients to receive treatment without any penalty for their "abusive lifestyles."
