The assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin
Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated in 1995, amid a period of political division and turmoil, with Benjamin Netanyahu at the center of a right-wing backlash against him. Netanyahu claimed that Rabin favored the wellbeing of the people of Gaza over the security of Israeli citizens, but the assassination created an opportunity for peace that was ultimately not realized.
