The Black Panther Party was founded by Huey P Newton and Bobby Seale in 1966 in Oakland California to protect black neighborhoods from police violence and to provide social services like free breakfast for children. They became the target of the FBI's COINTELPRO program which aimed to neutralize and disrupt political organizations.
