The invasion of Ukraine is a medieval form of punishment in which Russia, under Putin's leadership, aims to make Ukraine suffer for going in a different direction from their own. This pattern of destruction and forceful teaching of lessons is not new in the history of big states, but Russia seems unable to move on from it.
