In the post-World War II era, Cambodia was seeking independence from French colonial rule. In 1955, a referendum was held to determine the future of Cambodia and whether or not the people wanted to be ruled by the king, resulting in the establishment of a democratic government with U.S.-backed leader, Prince Norodom Sihanouk.
