The Catholic Church and state heavily policed children born out of wedlock, unsupervised and unkempt children, poor children, and children in any other living situation that didn't seem Catholic enough, leading to many boys being placed in reformatory schools and girls being placed in industrial schools to avoid perceived risks of their sexual immorality.
