The Catholic Church's Response to Abuse Allegations in Ireland
In 2001, the Catholic Church agreed to put 100 million euros in a special state fund for victims of abuse in Ireland, while also requiring victims to be barred from suing the church directly to receive the funds. This agreement came after evidence of the well-documented rapes carried out by Catholic priests were being exposed, and the church wanted to deal with the allegations while preventing potential lawsuits.
