Phil Knight, a middle-distance runner and graduate of Stanford Business School, founded Blue Ribbon Sports, which eventually became Nike. He thought it was outrageous that American students had to buy expensive German spikes and outlined a business plan to launch a competing brand in his Stanford paper.
